Livestock & Dairy

Livestock technology gives time back on the jobs that never stop. Robotic milking can let cows choose when they're milked, barn robots keep alleys clean, and virtual fencing collars manage grazing without fixed fences.

Buying advice

Rework staffing around robotic milking

Robotic milking changes who you employ as well as how many hours they work. A 2024 Choices article from the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association, based on a survey sent to 2,000 dairy farms in Wisconsin and Minnesota, found that adopters rely more on part-time workers while non-adopters keep a larger full-time workforce. The authors also note that different systems mechanise production processes to different degrees, and that farmers and staff face a learning curve. Before choosing between the Lely Astronaut A5, GEA DairyRobot R9500 and BouMatic Robotics RS21, write down who will fetch cows, answer night alarms and read the herd data, and ask each maker what training those people receive.

Ask for ISO 20966 test evidence

ISO 20966:2007 sets requirements for how automatic milking installations are built, covering safety and hygiene aspects, minimum performance and the tests that demonstrate them. Ask each maker which clauses its box has been tested against and by whom. Then read the cleaning routine and find out what alarms you receive when a cup fails to attach or milk quality looks wrong. Check whether your milk buyer or national hygiene rules add conditions for robotically milked herds before you sign. The Lely Discovery Collector is a different kind of machine from the milking boxes, so judge it against your barn layout and routines rather than against them.

Virtual fencing needs welfare safeguards

At our last update in October 2026, prices shown here started near $200 with the Halter Solar Cow Collar and climbed to near $220,000 with the GEA DairyRobot R9500, and every listing had a published price. An independent literature review for Australia's Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry concludes that virtual fencing can achieve acceptable welfare outcomes when the system has safeguards such as limits on consecutive electrical stimuli, automatic disabling when an animal moves fast and a secure physical outer boundary. Ask Halter and NoFence how their collars handle each point, how they flag an animal that is not learning, and whether stimulus collars are legal for your species where you farm. Cost the system across the whole herd, including base stations, software fees and spares.

What to look for

  • Cows per milking box, and how it fits your parlour or barn layout
  • Servicing needs, and who services the machine in your region
  • Collar coverage, battery life and how your herd learns virtual boundaries

Common questions

How many cows can one milking robot handle?

It depends on the system, your herd and how often cows are milked. Check each maker's specifications and share your herd size when you request a quote.

How do virtual fencing collars work?

Each animal wears a collar that follows boundaries you set in an app, typically using sound cues to guide animals back. The approach differs by maker, so check each listing.
